Platform Capabilities

WisdomX Orbis gives you a single, live view of your legacy estate, from the total savings opportunity down to the dependency map of a single system. Everything on the dashboard is calculated from your real infrastructure data, updated continuously as your estate changes.

The Dashboard

The Orbis Decommission Dashboard opens with five headline metrics:

  • Legacy Systems Identified — the total count of systems flagged for review, with a weekly trend showing new discoveries. This number grows as Orbis ingests more of your estate.
  • Potential Annual Savings — the total financial value recoverable by decommissioning your identified candidates. Broken down by infrastructure cost, licensing cost, and support and maintenance. Updated as new systems are identified and costs change.
  • High-Risk Systems — systems currently flagged with compliance, security, or operational risk that require priority attention. Trend shows whether your risk exposure is growing or reducing week on week.
  • Estimated Decommissions — the number of systems currently approved or in progress for decommissioning, with a target completion date.
  • Carbon and Energy Savings (coming soon) — calculated from CPU usage data, unused data volumes, and obsolete applications running in the background. As systems are decommissioned, their energy footprint is removed and the savings are tracked cumulatively.

Cost Saving Breakdown

The cost saving breakdown gives you a clear picture of where your savings are coming from. For each decommissioning candidate, Orbis attributes its running cost across three categories:

  • Infrastructure cost — hosting, compute, and storage costs associated with keeping the system running
  • Licensing cost — vendor licence fees, support contracts, and subscription costs
  • Support and maintenance — internal and external effort spent keeping the system operational

The breakdown is shown as both a percentage split and an absolute figure, so finance teams can immediately understand the composition of the savings opportunity. The view can be toggled between monthly and annual figures.

Risk and Compliance Overview

The Risk and Compliance panel surfaces the three categories of risk present in your legacy estate:

  • Compliance Issues — systems with known compliance gaps, such as data retention obligations, regulatory controls, or audit requirements that are not currently being met.
  • Security Risks — systems with active security vulnerabilities, unpatched software, or configurations that represent an exploitable risk to your wider estate.
  • Operational Risk — systems whose failure or unexpected shutdown would cause disruption to live business processes or downstream systems.

Each category shows the number of systems currently carrying that risk. Clicking View Risk Analysis takes you to a full breakdown by system, allowing you to prioritise which risks to address first.

The Risk and Compliance Overview updates automatically as new systems are ingested and as existing systems change status.

Lifecycle Progress

Every system in your Orbis estate is assigned one of four lifecycle statuses:

  • Active — the system is in live use and not currently a decommissioning candidate.
  • Redundant — the system has a replacement in place or its function has been absorbed elsewhere. It is a decommissioning candidate.
  • Obsolete — the system is no longer fit for purpose, is end-of-life, or carries risk significant enough to warrant priority closure. It is a high-priority decommissioning candidate.
  • Decommissioned — the system has been approved, archived via Snapshot, and successfully closed.

The Lifecycle Progress panel shows the percentage of your total estate in each status, giving programme leaders a single view of overall progress. The target is to move as many systems as possible from Redundant and Obsolete into Decommissioned.

System Dependency Map

Before any system is decommissioned, your team needs to understand what depends on it. The System Dependency Map provides a visual graph of every system's connections across your estate.

For each system, the map shows:

  • Traffic — active data flows between this system and others
  • Latency — response times on each connection, flagging slow or degraded links
  • Error % — the current error rate on each connection
  • Inferred — connections that Orbis has identified through data analysis rather than direct configuration. These represent hidden dependencies that may not appear in your CMDB

The dependency map is interactive. Click any system to centre the view on it and see all first and second-degree connections. This is the view your team should review before approving any decommission, to confirm there are no active dependencies that would be disrupted.

Decommissions Data Insights

The Data Insights table is the working list your team uses to review and act on decommissioning candidates. For each system it shows:

Recommendation types:

  • Decommission — Orbis recommends closing this system. The risk and cost profile justifies closure. Clicking the action opens the decision flow where your team can approve and initiate the Snapshot archiving process.
  • Review — the system requires further investigation before a decision can be made. Typically used for systems where dependency data is incomplete.
  • Archive — the system is not in active use but should be preserved rather than deleted, typically for compliance, legal hold, or reference purposes.

Carbon and Energy Savings (Coming Soon)

WisdomX Orbis will calculate the carbon and energy impact of your decommissioning programme automatically, using the infrastructure data already captured during estate ingestion.

The calculation is based on:

  • CPU usage data from active and idle systems
  • Volume of unused data being stored and processed
  • Obsolete applications running in the background consuming compute resource
  • Energy consumption of decommissioned versus retained systems over time

As systems are closed, their energy footprint is removed from the running total and the cumulative carbon saving is tracked on the dashboard. This gives sustainability and ESG reporting teams a data-backed figure for the environmental impact of the programme, with no additional data collection required.
